Canadian Catalysis Award

The 2002 Catalysis Award of the Canadian Institute for Chemistry has been given to Professor Michael Baird of Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario. Sponsored by the Canadian Catalysis Foundation, this prize is given in even-numbered years to a researcher who has contributed to the advancement of catalysis in Canada. Michael Baird is an organometallic chemist who combines research in fundamental organo transition metal chemistry with applications to organic syntheses and catalysis. Most recently, Professor Baird has been exploring the utilization of metallocene-like organometallic compounds as homogeneous catalysts/initiators for olefin polymerization, which show interesting solvent-specific stereochemical behavior, and a wide range of polymerization pathways for various monomer systems.

Japanese Awards

The Awards of the Chemical Society of Japan
(38,000 members) for 2001 were given to 6 chemists last March. Among them are: Professor T. Katsuki, Kyushu University, for his work on metal-catalyzed symmetric reactions involving several novel stereoselective organic syntheses using metal complexes for catalysts-including the asymmetric oxidation reaction to form epoxides from allyl alcohols, better known as the Katsuki-Sharpless reaction; Professor S. Takahashi, Osaka University, for his work in developing new functionalities of organometallic compounds of group 10 transitions metals using organic syntheses; Professor M. Misono, Kogakuin University, for his work on catalyst designs based on well-defined mixed oxides-involving his attempts to establish a general methodology for the design of practical metal oxide catalysts using mixed oxides that have well-defined bulk structure, such as heteropoly compounds, perovskites, crystalline P-V-O and zeolites. The recipients of the awards of the Catalysis Society of Japan (2,600 members) for 2001 are: Dr. M. Haruta, AIST, for his work on the catalysis of ultrafine gold particles. He found very high catalytic activity of nanoparticles of gold tightly bound on the surface of transition metal oxides. It has not only found practical applications as environmental catalysts and gas sensors but also opened new aspects of the catalysis of ultrafine noble metals; Professor T. Funabiki, Kyoto University, for his work on 'complex catalysis for oxygenation having an enzymatic function.' He has provided new information about the catalytic function of iron complexes for mono and dioxygenation and developed several new synthetic reactions such as selective cyanation of vinyl halides; Drs. A. Aoshima, S. Yamamatsu, M. Chono, Y. Suzuki and T. Yamaguchi, Asahi Chemical Co., for their work on a metallic compound catalyst for oxidative esterification to produce methyl methacrylate. They developed an industrial process for the synthesis of methyl methacrylate directly from methacrolein, oxygen and methanol. They found a novel intermetallic compound (Pd3Pb) for catalyst.
